Subway gets Vegan

When a major fast food chain decides to offer vegan options, we’re gonna get behind that.  Subway is currently offering 3 new vegan sandwich patties and 3 additional vegetarian patty options. Way groovy, man!

The vegan choices, shown in order below, are Sweet Riblet, Malibu Greek and Italian Black Bean varieties.  They can be served on one of the five vegan breads offered at the restaurant: Roasted Garlic, Sourdough, Light Wheat English Muffin, Hearty Italian and Hearty Italian White.

These delectable vegan sandwiches are the result of animal advocacy organization, Compassion Over Killing, getting involved with the Subway folks and starting the ‘We Love Subway’ campaign. Basically, it’s an ongoing web-based effort to convince Subway stores to offer vegetarian and vegan options. You can go there right now and log in and add your voice to the masses. Tell Subway you are jazzed for the vegan offerings and to bring them to more stores!

Recently the Humane League had a Subway sandwich party at the Subway Cafe in Ellicott City, MD  and we stopped by to say hello. Amazingly, we ran into a father and his two daughters that had driven from NYC to try the vegan subs! No joke! They had made their way to Maryland, trying to find these savory treats and ended up at the Subway Cafe in Ellicott City just as all the other vegans and vegetarians were arriving to eat. Incredible, isn’t it, how far vegans will go to get food? We’d like to add, that this particular Subway Cafe also offers fancy coffee drinks with soy milk. Which is another plus, especially for DH.

For the vegetarians reading…we wanted to share that there are 3 additional vegetarian sandwiches Subway is trying out as well: The Sweet N Spicy Chik’n, Asian Veggie and the Sweet Onion Breakfast Patty. They looked tasty and the girl in front of us ordered a Sweet N Spicy Chik’N. She said it was good with a chewy texture but not too spicy.

It’s also “Avocado Season” at Subway and they are offering the “Ultimate Veggie” – which can be made vegan by loading it down the the featured ingredients of avocado, cuckes and spinach. MMMmm.

Now, you ask, where can I get my hands on these delectable sandwiches? We’ve got that covered. Below is a list. So hop in the car or get on the Metro and head over to the nearest Subway. And if you’re in NYC, well, we’re down here – just waiting to greet you with a Subway vegan sandwich in hand. Join the fun!

Oh – and thanks Compassion Over Killing – for doing the tough work to make this happen for the rest of us. We are so grateful!

UPDATE: As of July 8, we have heard that these Subway locations are selling out of the new vegan and vegetarian options, but Subway is not yet restocking them! Boo!

According to the Compassion Over Killing website:

“Your feedback is urgently needed: While a couple of Subway Café stores are still offering vegan sandwiches while supplies last, the official testing phase appears to be over — and eager customers everywhere are now awaiting the company’s decision, hoping to soon find vegan options on every Subway menu across the US.

Visit today or call 203-877-4281 to let Subway know that there’s an increasing consumer demand for healthier and more humane food choices and to urge the company to add vegan options to all of its menus.  ”

So let’s all get online and get on the phone, and get these tasty sandwiches added to the menu!

We will keep you posted as we learn more!
