On the radio in Annapolis, MD!

Recently, the Bohemian Girl (aka as Rissa) was honored to be interviewed on Annapolis Green Radio for their show on “Eating Thoughtfully” – basically it was a show about how diet affects the planet.  You can still listen to the show online, even if you can’t tune into Annapolis 99.5FM – it’s preserved on the internet forever!

Rissa shared the interview with Lori, director of Sister Eden, where so many of our fun vegan recipes and eco-crafts find their home online. Thanks to Eliva and Vic, hosts of the Living Green show on WNAV for having Lori and myself in to talk about diet and the environment – it was super fun (though I was nervous), and hope your listeners enjoy the program!

Art for Animals Show Opening – November 28th

On Black Friday, grab your credit card and head to the Grind House Cafe and Juice Bar at 2431 Saint Paul Street, Baltimore, MD 21218 for a very special event. Eleven vegan artists have created new, original works of art to benefit Burleigh Manor Animal Sanctuary in Ellicott City, and help cover their substantial needs for winter funding. Basically – instead of hitting the mall for mass-manufactured plastic junk, you can choose to support local artists; a small, local, woman-owned business; and an animal sanctuary – in one stop. This is a win-win-win.

Art items will make great holiday gifts, and Ayo & the Grind House crew are creating a VERY special night featuring herbal infused organic vodka & fresh juice cocktails, with an all-vegan small bites menu of ATL Finger Sandwiches, Garlik Kale Salad and Autumn-Quinoa Sushi – and Raw Chocolate Mousse with Berries.

Tickets for this meal are $20 and a large portion of that goes to the Sanctuary. You can order this plate in Gluten-Free as well. Really this is an incredible deal – usually a cocktail like that alone is $12 to $15!

Tickets are on sale now, and only ticket-holders get the special meal and cocktail. You can attend for free without the meal. Usual favorites from Grind House will be available – wraps, smoothies, juices, soup – BUT these purchase do not benefit the animals, they are just usual purchases. ONLY the ticketed event meal is a donation for the animals.

Artists for the event…

Jessica Lynn Baligush (oil on canvas)

Christina Canner (watercolor and ink)

Nathaniel Corn (photographs on wood)
Rachel Horner (acrylic on canvas)
Serena Jarvis (wooden palate and acrylic)
Andrea Gauzza-Langlie (mixed media)
Jason & Kristin Linde (collaboration – mixed media)
Miguel Marron (acrylic on canvas)
Rissa Miller (photographs on aluminum)
Dora Sirgusa-Parks (acrylic on porcelain)

This event is co-sponsored by Baltimore Vegan Drinks, the Grind House Juice Bar, and Burleigh Manor Animal Sanctuary. Organic, herb-infused vodkas provided by The Wine Bin. The event is on Friday November 28th from 6pm to 9pm. Tickets for the special meal are $20; event is free to attend without a ticket and other food is available. But really, why would you skip that chocolate mousse?? DUH!

So come get arty and enjoy a special show created by vegans to benefit the animals! If you haven’t yet seen the wonderful new space at the Grind House, you are in for a TREAT!

We both have new artwork in the show – hope to see you there – and bring a friend!

Baltimore Vegan Drinks @ Joe Squared/Power Plant

There’s nothing like pizza and a cold brew on a June evening. So if you’re in the Baltimore area, stop by Joe Squared/Power Plant, 30 Market Place in Baltimore on Tuesday evening, June 17 from 7pm to 9pm for Baltimore Vegan Drinks.

Joe Squared is best known for their sourdough-crust pizzas. They have even been on Food Network! The vegan options are pretty vast. Try any of these toppings…  Crushed tomato sauce with … vegan cheese, apples, artichokes, asparagus, avacado, basil , black beans, broccoli, carrots, cilantro, corn, eggplant, dill, fennel, mint, mushrooms, grren or black olives, onions or shallts, bell/jalapeno/pepperocini peppers, pineapple, white or sweet potatoes, rosemary, spinach, thyme, fresh/roasted/sundried tomatoes or zucchini.

The special pizza for the night will feature OLD BAY potatoes, spinach and sun-dried tomatoes. Yea, it’s pretty awesome. We tried it.

The tastiness doesn’t stop at pizza, though. Joe Squared knows how to feed vegans! There are house-made veggie burgers, dinner salads and soup.

And the RISOTTO is in a league all by itself!  With flavors ranging from asparagus/orange, avocado/pine nut/corn, and roasted mushroom with almonds and thyme to sweet potato/sage and spinach with red onion and walnuts, these rice entrees are gluten-free and fabulous.

So plan to stop by. There’s outdoor seating if it’s nice. Or hang out inside at the bar, where you can hook it up with the evening’s drink specials: Dale’s Pale Ale or Mama’s Little Yella Pils for $4 and Mojitos for $5.

Don’t forget – that’s Tuesday June 17th at Joe Squared/Power Plant from 7pm to pm. See you at Baltimore Vegan Drinks!

Cooking with BEER!

Baltimore Vegan Drinks is taking the beer out of the pub and putting it… in your food! Next Tuesday March 25th, Chef Gregory Brown from The Land of Kush will present the first in a “Cooking with Booze” series for BVDrinks from 7pm to 9pm, highlighting several dishes made with beer. Like these dank beer-battered onion rings. Yes, we got to be there for the preview tasting. Yes, these are killer-delicious. It’s like stepping back in time to all the greasy fried onion ring heaven you remember from county fairs – only waaay better because these have BEER in them and they’re VEGAN. Sigh…

Chef Gregory will be preparing other offerings as well, including Seitan Stewed in Beer Broth with Homemade Dumplin’s. Very tasty with mixed veggies!

It’s the man himself – Chef Gregory Brown!!! You know and love him from his cafe – all that wonderful soul food like kale salad, seitan ribs and of course, the mac & cheese.

This is an awesome class not to be missed! The event will be hosted by the Local Color Flowers studio on Brentwood Ave. in Baltimore. Yes, there will be door prizes, like at all Baltimore Vegan Drinks events! And surprises too! Guests will get goodie bags and a special vegan beer guide made by none-other than blogger, The Vegan’s Husband. Tickets are $30 and available on the BVDrinks event page.

Don’t miss out, because we WILL eat your portion of the onion rings! (We don’t feel bad about that, either…)

Baltimore Vegan Drinks @ Red Emma’s – Jan. 28th

Baltimore Vegan Drinks is back up and running for 2014! The first event will be at the new location of Red Emma’s in downtown Baltimore. The space is HUGE and very cool, located at 30 W. North Ave. Parking is available on-street (free after 6pm) or at the pay-lot on Maryland Ave. one block away.

First and foremost, Red Emma’s is a coffee house. Yes, this almond-milk latte was as good as it looks. The folks at Red Emma’s even roast their own coffee beans on-site!

Now, about the food… This is vegan LOX on an everything bagel with loads of veggies and capers. Before visiting Red Emma’s, we had never even heard of vegan lox.

The best-selling item at Red Emma’s is their cheesecake. It’s creamy, dreamy and in this case, smothered in a sweet cranberry topping.

The vegan powerhouse is another staple menu item. Always delicious, always hearty.

Each day Red Emma’s offers a different soup. This is Greek Five-Bean, served with gluten-free & vegan corn muffins. Perfect on a winter day!

What’s that you say? Vegan pesto? Smeared all over toasty baguette slices? Yes, please!

Red Emma’s tasty pesto also finds a tasty home on the Malapesto Sandwich, featuring tomatoes and vegan cheese, shown here on a grilled bagel.

Tofu Bahn Mi anyone? You gotta try the lemongrass tofu on this one. Eureka.

Let’s show off the desserts a little more… First a chocolate coconut cake. Then a gluten-free mocha chocolate cake. All vegan, all made in-house.

Red Emma’s in special in other ways too. They are a cooperatively owned business with a social mission to bring ethical living, eco-awareness and justice to all. We’re all for that. And we’d like to say we’re deep because we love this mug – but really, our big struggle was deciding how many menu items we could eat at one sitting.

There’s a super bookstore on the grounds too – they even have great vegan titles.

Don’t miss this terrific event! Baltimore Vegan Drinks at Red Emma’s will be from 7pm to 9pm on Tuesday January 28th. It’s free to attend and all ages are welcome. Specials will be announced on Facebook close to the day-of, including coffee cocktails and wine/beer offerings. See you there!
